Common questions about FairPlay
Direct answers about splitting chores, tracking mental load, privacy, setup, pricing, and how FairPlay helps two people share household labor more fairly.
What is FairPlay?
FairPlay is an iPhone app for two people who share a home and want a fairer way to split chores. It tracks household work with effort points, makes the mental load visible, and assigns the next task based on who has contributed less.
Who is FairPlay for?
FairPlay is for couples, roommates, siblings, or any two people who split household responsibilities. It is especially useful when one person feels they carry more chores, planning, reminders, or invisible work than the other.
How does FairPlay decide who's next?
FairPlay looks at the current points balance. The person who has done less household work is more likely to receive the next task, while the person who has contributed more is less likely to get it. Over time, this helps the split move back toward fairness.
Why does FairPlay use points instead of counting tasks?
FairPlay uses points because not every chore takes the same effort. Taking out the trash, cooking dinner, planning meals, booking an appointment, and deep-cleaning the bathroom do not carry the same time, energy, or mental load. Points make the split more realistic than a simple task count.
What is the mental load?
The mental load is the planning, remembering, anticipating, and coordinating that keeps a household running. It includes work like noticing groceries are low, remembering appointments, planning meals, buying gifts, or knowing when chores need to happen.
Can FairPlay track invisible household work?
Yes. FairPlay can track visible chores like dishes and laundry, but it can also track invisible work such as scheduling repairs, planning meals, remembering birthdays, managing pet care, buying supplies, or coordinating appointments.
Can I add custom tasks?
Yes. You can add any household task that matters in your home. Custom tasks are useful for responsibilities that are specific to your life, such as calling the landlord, packing school bags, watering plants, or managing shared errands.
Does FairPlay include built-in chores?
Yes. FairPlay includes common household chores so you can set up quickly, and you can add your own tasks when the default list does not cover how your household actually works.
Do both people need an account?
No. FairPlay is designed to work without account setup. You add both names, choose tasks, and start tracking the household balance in less than a minute.
Does FairPlay require an internet connection?
FairPlay is designed around a simple on-device experience. You do not need to create an account or send household data to a server to track chores and see the balance.
Is my data shared anywhere?
No. FairPlay does not collect names, scores, chores, or personal household data. Your information stays on your phone, and when you delete the app, the local data is removed with it.
Can FairPlay help reduce arguments about chores?
FairPlay helps reduce chore arguments by turning vague feelings into a visible balance. Instead of debating who did more, both people can see the current effort split and let the app assign the next task based on contribution.
Does FairPlay replace conversations about household labor?
No. FairPlay does not replace communication. It gives both people a shared, neutral view of the household workload so conversations about chores can start from the same facts instead of memory, frustration, or blame.
Can FairPlay be used by roommates?
Yes. FairPlay works for two people sharing a home, including roommates. If two people need to split chores and avoid one person carrying more of the work, FairPlay can help track and balance the load.
Can FairPlay be used by families?
FairPlay is currently designed for two people. It works best for couples, co-parents, roommates, or two household members who want a simple way to share responsibilities more fairly.
How long does setup take?
Setup takes less than a minute. Add both people, choose names and colors, select common household tasks or create custom tasks, then start assigning chores based on the current balance.
What kinds of tasks can I track?
You can track recurring chores, one-off errands, household admin, emotional labor, pet care, shopping, cleaning, cooking, planning, repairs, and any other work that helps keep the home running.
How is FairPlay different from a shared to-do list?
A shared to-do list shows what needs to be done. FairPlay shows who has been carrying the workload and assigns the next task based on effort balance, which makes it better suited for fairness, mental load, and household equity.
How is FairPlay different from a chore chart?
A chore chart usually assigns fixed responsibilities. FairPlay adapts to what each person has actually done, using points to account for effort and mental load instead of assuming every task is equal.
Is FairPlay only for people who are already having conflict?
No. FairPlay can help before chores become a recurring conflict. It gives two people a lightweight way to keep the household balance visible, prevent resentment, and notice imbalance early.
How much does FairPlay cost?
FairPlay is a paid app available on the App Store. Pricing is shown on the App Store before download, billing is handled by Apple, and there are no surprise charges from FairPlay.
Where can I download FairPlay?
You can download FairPlay from the Apple App Store. The app is currently presented as an iPhone app for people who want to split chores, track mental load, and make household labor more visible.
